Iowa High School Principal and 10-Year-Old Child Killed, 5 Others Injured in Tragic UTV Crash

A heartbreaking accident in Iowa has left two families grieving, a school community mourning, and many people praying after a high school principal and a 10-year-old child lost their lives following a collision involving a utility terrain vehicle UTV (also known as a side-by-side off-road vehicle)”and another vehicle.

Among those who died was 33-year-old Joshua “Josh” Tack, who served as the junior/senior high school principal for the BCLUW Community School District.

For those who knew and loved Josh, this is far more than another tragic headline. A wife has lost her husband. Children have lost their father. Students and educators have lost a principal and colleague. And another family is facing the unimaginable grief of losing a 10-year-old child.

As Christians, there are moments when words simply aren't enough. We may not understand why tragedy happens, but we can surround those who are hurting with prayer, compassion, and the hope we have in Jesus Christ.

A Saturday Night Ends in Tragedy

The crash happened on Saturday, Aug. 8, at approximately 9:21 p.m. at the intersection of East Worthington Road and Comer Road in Dubuque County, Iowa, according to reports from KCRG, KWWL and WHO 13.

The Dubuque County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene after receiving reports of a collision involving a UTV and a vehicle.

What first responders encountered was devastating.

According to reports, six people were seriously injured in connection with the crash. Emergency personnel worked to provide aid and transport those who needed additional medical care. Tragically, a 10-year-old child was pronounced dead at the scene.

Josh Tack was among those seriously injured. He was transported to a hospital, where he later died from the injuries he sustained in the collision. He was only 33 years old.

A School Community Mourns Principal Josh Tack

News of Josh's death brought tremendous sadness to the BCLUW Community School District, where he served as the junior/senior high school principal.

The district shared the heartbreaking news with the community and asked people to remember his loved ones in prayer.

“It is with great sadness that we share the news that Josh Tack, Jr/Sr High School Principal, passed away from injuries sustained in an accident this weekend,” the district wrote in a social media statement.

The district continued by asking people to keep Josh's wife, Blake, their children, extended family and the entire BCLUW community in their thoughts and prayers. For a school community, the loss of a principal can be deeply personal.

A principal isn't simply someone who manages a building. He is there for students during difficult days, celebrates their accomplishments, works alongside teachers and staff, and becomes part of the lives of countless families. Now, the halls where Josh once served will carry the weight of his absence.

Several Others Were Injured

Dubuque County Sheriff Joe Kennedy told WHO 13 that Josh had reportedly been traveling northbound in the UTV with five other passengers on Saturday evening. Authorities said the UTV was crossing the intersection when it was struck by an eastbound vehicle. The impact left multiple people injured.

According to the sheriff, two passengers were airlifted to a hospital in Iowa City, while two others were transported to a local hospital for treatment of various injuries. The driver of the other vehicle reportedly suffered minor injuries and was also transported to a hospital.

Ultimately, Josh and the 10-year-old child died from injuries sustained in the crash. Authorities have said the circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation. As investigators work to determine exactly what happened, families and friends are left facing a reality that changed in a matter of seconds.

When Life Changes Without Warning

Stories like this are painful because they remind us just how quickly life can change. A normal Saturday evening can suddenly become a family's darkest night. Plans for tomorrow can disappear without warning.

There are conversations we assume we'll have later, hugs we believe we'll get another chance to give, and words like “I love you” that we sometimes postpone because we believe there will always be another day. Scripture reminds us of the uncertainty of earthly life.

James 4:14 says:

“Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.”

That truth isn't meant to make Christians live in fear. Instead, it reminds us to treasure the people God has placed in our lives and to recognize each day as a gift.

• Make the phone call today.
• Give the hug today.
• Tell someone how much they mean to you today.

And most importantly, don't put off your relationship with God.

Where Is God When Our Hearts Are Broken?

When tragedy strikes, even people with strong faith may find themselves asking difficult questions.

• Why did this happen?
• Why so young?
• Why this family?
• Why this child?

There are times when we simply will not have the answers we desperately want. Christian faith does not require us to pretend that grief doesn't hurt. Jesus Himself wept in the face of death. But Scripture gives us a promise for the moments when our hearts feel shattered.

Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart.”

• God does not abandon us in our grief. He meets us there.
• When a mother or father cries behind a closed door, God sees.
• When a spouse reaches across an empty bed, God sees.

When children struggle to understand why someone they love isn't coming home, God sees. When students walk into school knowing their principal will never walk through those doors again, God sees.

And when a family grieves the loss of a precious 10-year-old child, God sees every tear. Sometimes faith isn't having an explanation. Sometimes faith is trusting God while our hearts are still asking why.

A Community Can Become the Hands and Feet of Christ

In the days and weeks following a tragedy, prayer matters tremendously—but Christians are also called to put compassion into action. Galatians 6:2 tells us:

“Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.”

There may be meals that need to be prepared, children who need encouragement, grieving friends who need someone to listen, and families who simply need to know they are not walking through this valley alone.

• We may not be able to remove someone's grief.
• We may not have the right words.
• But we can show up.
• We can pray.
• We can listen.
• We can love.

And sometimes simply being present is one of the most Christlike things we can do.
