Michigan Siblings Karalee, 13, and Calvin, 12, Die After Tragic Bicycle Crash

For their family, what began as an ordinary September day became a heartbreaking tragedy. Now, as loved ones prepare to say goodbye to both children, their mother is leaning on her faith and asking people everywhere to continue praying.
A Bicycle Ride Ends in Tragedy
According to local news reports, Karalee and Calvin were riding their bicycles in Leroy Township, Michigan, on September 5 when they were struck by a Ford Explorer at approximately 11:30 a.m.
The siblings were reportedly riding along Grand River Avenue near North Meech Road when the collision occurred. Both children were wearing helmets.
Michigan State Police said drugs and alcohol were not believed to have been factors in the crash, according to local reports. The 64-year-old woman driving the Ford Explorer remained at the scene.
Calvin died at the scene.
Karalee survived the initial collision but suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital, where her family faced several agonizing days hoping and praying for their daughter.
For five days, Karalee fought for her life.

Karalee Dies Five Days After Her Brother
On September 10, Karalee's mother, Raquel Roark Shepard, announced that her 13-year-old daughter had died from her injuries.
In a message filled with unimaginable grief but also unmistakable faith, she shared that the family's hearts were broken beyond words.
Yet even in one of the darkest moments a parent could ever experience, she pointed to the hope she has in Jesus Christ.
She wrote that the family found comfort believing Karalee and Calvin were together again and "in the loving arms of our Savior." Those words carry tremendous weight.
Faith does not mean Christians never grieve. It does not mean tears disappear or that losing someone we love suddenly becomes understandable.
Jesus Himself wept in the face of death. But Scripture reminds us that grief does not have to exist without hope. For Christians, death does not have the final word. Jesus does.
The Shepard family's faith cannot erase the empty chairs, the memories, or the pain of losing two children. But it can provide something to hold onto when everything else feels as though it has fallen apart.
Psalm 34:18 tells us:

She remembered him as a boy who embraced life enthusiastically. He enjoyed soccer, basketball, swimming, volleyball, and video games. But perhaps his greatest legacy had nothing to do with sports or hobbies.
It was how he treated other people.
According to his mother, Calvin noticed children who were being teased or excluded and would stand up for them. He wanted others to know they mattered. He wanted people around him to feel included, valued, and loved. What a remarkable thing to be remembered for at only 12 years old.
