Florida Mom and 2-Year-Old Daughter Killed by Lightning in Heartbreaking Tragedy

A Florida family is facing unimaginable grief after a mother and her 2-year-old daughter were tragically killed after being struck by lightning.

Kenya Glasgow, 31, and her young daughter, Kennedi, died following the devastating incident in Margate, Florida, on Sunday, August 23.

For those who loved them, what began as an ordinary Sunday became a day that would forever change their lives.

And in the middle of overwhelming heartbreak, Kenya's husband, Kam, shared words about love, faith, God, and the preciousness of life that are touching hearts.

A Sudden Tragedy in Florida

According to reports from WPLG, WTVJ and The Palm Beach Post, Margate Police and Margate Fire Rescue responded at approximately 2:30 p.m. after receiving reports of two people struck by lightning near 7900 Northwest First Street.

When first responders arrived, they reportedly found the mother and child lying on a sidewalk. Emergency personnel immediately began performing CPR in an attempt to save them.

Kenya was transported to North Broward Medical Center in Deerfield Beach, while her daughter was taken to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale.

Tragically, both mother and daughter were later pronounced dead.

Kenya was only 31 years old.

Kennedi was just 2.

It is difficult to comprehend how quickly life can change. A family can begin a day expecting tomorrow to look much like today, only to suddenly find themselves facing a loss they could never have imagined.

The Bible reminds us of the fragility of our earthly lives.

James 4:14 says:

"What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes."

Those words aren't meant to make us live in fear. They remind us to recognize the incredible value of the time God has given us and the people He has placed in our lives.

A Lightning Strike a Neighbor Will Never Forget

A nearby resident, Prince Moody, described the frightening moment to WPLG.

He said he heard the "loudest lightning strike I could hear," followed by thunder and an orange glow that went through his window.

After learning what had happened, his thoughts immediately turned toward the grieving family.

"Imagine the family that's actually going through this," he told the station. "The father, you know. I have a kid and I can imagine. My thoughts and prayers."

For Kam and the surviving members of this family, however, this wasn't simply a tragic news story.

• It was their life.
• A husband lost his wife.
• A little girl lost her mother and sister.
• A family lost two people they deeply loved.

A Husband's Heartbreaking Tribute

Following the deaths, Kam shared a deeply emotional tribute to Kenya and Kennedi on social media.

"I just lost my best friend. My daughter just lost her best friend," he wrote.

But amid those heartbreaking words, Kam also spoke about his relationship with God.

"After I lost my father a few years ago I learned a very valuable lesson and that's to never question God. My babies didn't suffer."

Those words reveal the complicated place where grief and faith sometimes meet. Faith does not mean that Christians don't hurt. Faith doesn't mean we don't cry. It doesn't mean we understand why tragedy happens. And it certainly doesn't mean we won't sometimes have questions for God.

Even Jesus wept. When Lazarus died, John 11:35 gives us one of the shortest and perhaps most powerful verses in Scripture:

"Jesus wept."

Jesus knew Lazarus would be raised, yet He still entered into the sorrow surrounding Him. That tells us something beautiful about the heart of God. When we grieve, God is not indifferent to our pain.

Psalm 34:18 tells us:

"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."

There may be moments when a grieving family cannot find the words to pray. There may be days when simply getting out of bed feels overwhelming.

In those moments, God is still near.

"It Doesn't Take Much to Be Kind"

Kam's tribute also contained a message that all of us can carry forward.

He spoke about the "beautiful light" his wife and daughter brought into the lives of others and encouraged people who experienced that light to cherish it. Then he shared a simple lesson:

"It gives us all the blueprint to just love others and always remember it doesn't take much to be kind."

What a powerful reminder.

We live in a world that can often feel divided, angry and hurried. It is easy to become consumed with our schedules, disagreements, problems and plans for tomorrow.

But Jesus continually called His followers back to something much simpler:

• Love God.
• Love one another.

Jesus said in John 13:34:

"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another."

We never know what someone else is carrying. The stranger standing beside us may have just received devastating news. The coworker who seems distracted may be fighting a battle nobody knows about. The neighbor we haven't spoken to lately may desperately need encouragement.

And the family member we assume will always be there deserves to hear "I love you" today.

• Kindness doesn't always require a grand gesture.
• Sometimes it's a phone call.
• Sometimes it's forgiveness.
• Sometimes it's sitting beside someone who is hurting.
• Sometimes it's simply telling someone how much they mean to you.

"Thank You Both for Choosing Me"

Kam ended his tribute with words directly to his wife and daughter:

"Kenya Kennedi I Love You Both So Much. I Thank You Both For Choosing Me As Your Husband And Father."

He also promised that he and Kensli would continue moving forward "one day at time." Those words are heartbreaking because they reveal both the depth of his love and the enormous emptiness left behind. Grief often comes one day at a time. Sometimes one hour at a time.

For Christians walking through loss, there is no requirement to pretend everything is okay.

• We can mourn and still believe.
• We can cry and still trust.
• We can have questions and still pray.
• We can feel brokenhearted while holding onto the promises of God.

Where Is God When Tragedy Strikes?

Stories like this inevitably raise one of life's hardest questions: Where is God when something terrible happens?

There are no simple words that can erase the pain of losing a wife, mother, daughter or sister.

Christian faith does not promise that followers of Jesus will escape suffering. In fact, Jesus told His disciples plainly that this world would bring trouble. But He didn't stop there. In John 16:33, Jesus said:

"In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

Our hope is not that tragedy will never enter our lives. Our hope is that tragedy does not have the final word. For believers, death is not the end of the story. Jesus said in John 11:25:

"I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die."

That promise is at the very heart of Christianity. The cross reminds us that God understands suffering. The empty tomb reminds us that death does not win. And the resurrection reminds us that our greatest hope reaches beyond this temporary life.

Hold the People You Love a Little Closer

None of us knows what tomorrow will bring.

That's why perhaps one of the greatest ways we can honor stories like Kenya and Kennedi's is by allowing them to change how we love the people still beside us.

• Tell your spouse you love them.
• Hug your children.
• Call your parents.
• Forgive someone you've been avoiding.
• Say the words you've been waiting to say.
• Pray with your family.
• Put down the phone for a few minutes and be present.

Life is precious, and sometimes we don't realize just how precious until something reminds us how quickly everything can change.
