2-Year-Old Alayna Found Drowning in Flooded Indiana Basement, Now Fighting for Her Life
What began as a frightening night of historic flooding in Indiana quickly became one family’s desperate fight to save their 2-year-old daughter.
Little Alayna was found drowning in the flooded basement of her family’s Rush County home as rising water surrounded the property and made it extremely difficult for emergency crews to reach them.
Today, her family is holding tightly to hope, celebrating encouraging signs of improvement and asking others to pray as their little girl continues her recovery.
For Christians watching this story unfold, it is also a powerful reminder of how quickly life can change, and why we are called to surround hurting families with prayer, compassion, and love.
A Terrifying Discovery During the Flood
At approximately 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12, authorities received a report involving a 2-year-old child who had drowned at a residence in Rush County, according to information released by the Rush County Sheriff’s Department.
The child was later identified by family members as Alayna.
Emergency crews immediately responded, but the historic flooding created a serious obstacle.
According to the sheriff’s department, roads were “impassable in several locations.” When first responders finally approached the property, they discovered that the home itself was surrounded by deep floodwater.
Every minute mattered.
Inside the home, Alayna’s mother, Becky, was already performing lifesaving measures on her daughter.
It is difficult to imagine what this mother must have experienced in those moments, floodwaters surrounding her home while she desperately worked to save her little girl.
But help was coming.
A Farmer and His Tractor Help Rescuers Reach the Family
In the middle of the emergency, a local farmer stepped forward to help. Using a tractor, the farmer assisted emergency personnel in reaching the flooded residence when conventional vehicles could not safely make it through the water.
The farmer then helped transport Alayna and her family out of the flooded area and toward emergency medical care. It was an ordinary piece of farm equipment being used in an extraordinary moment.
Stories like this remind us that sometimes help arrives in ways we could never predict. Scripture tells us:
“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” — Galatians 6:2
That evening, a community member saw people in desperate need and used what he had available to help them. The Rush County Sheriff’s Department expressed appreciation for both the emergency personnel and the farmer who helped rescuers reach the family.
“Our thoughts are with the child and the family,” Detective Randy M. Meek said in the department’s statement. “We also appreciate the quick response from emergency personnel and the local farmer who helped reach the residence during the flooding.”
Alayna’s Mother Performs CPR as Her Brother Calls 911
Alayna’s aunt, Poshia Bowling, later shared additional details about what happened through a GoFundMe established to support the family.
According to Bowling, Alayna was home with her mother, Becky, and her 13-year-old brother, Liem, as their home began flooding.
Then came the horrifying discovery.
“In the middle of this terrifying emergency, Alayna was found drowning in the flooded basement,” Bowling wrote.
What happened next showed incredible courage in the middle of chaos. According to Bowling, 13-year-old Liem remained “remarkably calm” and called 911 while his mother began performing CPR on Alayna.
When first responders finally reached the residence, they continued lifesaving efforts. Alayna was eventually airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital, where she was admitted to a pediatric intensive care unit.
Authorities investigated the circumstances surrounding the incident and determined that Alayna’s drowning was an accident.

For her family, the waiting began.
Anyone who has sat beside the hospital bed of someone they love knows how difficult those hours can be. There are questions no one can immediately answer and circumstances no one can control.
For Christians, these are often the moments when prayer becomes more than something we simply talk about. Prayer becomes where we place our fear. It becomes where we bring the questions we cannot answer.
And it becomes a way for people hundreds or even thousands of miles away to stand beside a family they may never personally meet.
Alayna’s family has continued to hold onto hope.
“We are holding tightly to every bit of hope,” Bowling wrote, sharing that Alayna had begun showing signs of improvement.
“We are incredibly grateful for every positive sign and are praying that she continues to make progress.”
Then Came an Encouraging Update
On Sunday, Aug. 16, Alayna’s family received news worth celebrating.
Bowling announced that the little girl had begun breathing on her own without the assistance of a ventilator.
“There is still a long road ahead for our sweet girl, and we know we aren’t out of the woods yet,” Bowling wrote. “But today, we are celebrating a HUGE victory.”
For a family that had watched a 2-year-old fight for her life just days earlier, breathing without a ventilator represented an enormous step forward. There may still be uncertainty surrounding Alayna’s recovery, and her family has acknowledged that the journey is far from over.
But today there is hope.
And sometimes hope comes one breath at a time. The Bible reminds us:
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18
Faith does not mean pretending that frightening circumstances are not frightening. It means trusting that we do not have to face those circumstances alone.

Historic Flooding Devastates Indiana
Alayna’s accident happened as severe storms and rainfall caused historic flooding across Indiana.
The White River, which travels through much of central and southern Indiana, including Indianapolis, reached levels in some areas that had not been seen since 1913, according to reports from the Associated Press.
The disaster has affected families throughout the state.
At least seven people have died amid the flooding, and Gov. Mike Braun said the storms caused widespread infrastructure damage.
Power outages also affected hundreds of thousands of residents. Nearly 130,000 utility customers remained without electricity as of late Sunday, according to the AP, down from a peak of approximately 300,000.
Behind every statistic is a family.
There are people facing damaged homes, lost possessions, disrupted lives and, in some cases, heartbreaking loss.
As we pray for Alayna, we should also remember the many Indiana families affected by these devastating floods.

A Community Can Make a Difference
Alayna’s aunt established a fundraiser to help the toddler’s parents manage the unexpected financial and practical burdens associated with the emergency and her hospitalization.
“Every dollar raised will be used to help meet the needs of Alayna and her immediate family as they navigate this unimaginable situation,” Bowling wrote.
But financial support is only one way people can respond.
- We can pray.
- We can encourage.
- We can help neighbors who are struggling.
And when disaster strikes our own communities, we can be willing to step forward, just as one farmer did when a flooded road stood between rescuers and a little girl who desperately needed help.
We may never know when God can use something as simple as a tractor, a phone call, a first responder’s training or the willingness of a stranger to make an enormous difference in another person’s life.
Please Pray for Alayna and Her Family
At Gods411, we believe prayer matters.
So today, we invite our community to join together and lift Alayna, her family, her medical team, and everyone affected by the Indiana flooding before God.
Heavenly Father,
We come before You today asking You to place Your loving and healing hands upon little Alayna.
Lord, thank You for every breath she is taking on her own and for every encouraging sign her family has received. We ask You to continue strengthening her body and guiding her through every step of recovery.
Give wisdom to her doctors, nurses, therapists, and everyone caring for her.
Surround her mother Becky, her brother Liem, and their entire family with Your peace and strength. When fear begins to overwhelm them, remind them that they are not walking through this valley alone.
We also thank You for the first responders who refused to give up when floodwaters blocked their path, and for the farmer who stepped forward with his tractor to help reach this family.
Please protect and comfort every person affected by the devastating floods across Indiana. Be near to those who have lost loved ones, homes, possessions, or livelihoods.
Bring help where help is needed, comfort where hearts are broken, and hope where people feel overwhelmed.
Lord, we place Alayna in Your loving care and ask for continued healing and restoration.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Alayna still has a journey ahead of her, but her latest progress has given her family a reason to celebrate.
Today, we celebrate with them.
And we keep praying.
