Now, as the teenager fights through an incredibly difficult medical battle, his family is holding onto hope and looking toward the long road of recovery ahead.
For those of us who believe in the power of prayer, Finn’s story is also an opportunity to come alongside a family facing circumstances no parent ever expects to endure.
Sometimes life changes in a matter of seconds. We may not understand why tragedy happens, but Scripture reminds us that even in our darkest and most frightening moments, God has not abandoned us.
A Routine Training Exercise Turns Tragic

Finn, who lives in Texas with his family, had traveled to San Diego to participate in the San Diego Junior Lifeguards Program. What should have been the conclusion of an exciting experience instead became the beginning of an unimaginable medical emergency.
During the training exercise, Finn dove into the ocean off Mission Bay and struck his head on the ocean floor, KGTV reported.
According to a GoFundMe organized to support his recovery, the impact left Finn briefly unconscious and caused a serious spinal cord injury.
His fellow lifeguards immediately came to his aid.
Those first moments following a spinal cord injury can be critical, and Finn was transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, where doctors performed emergency spinal surgery.
In a matter of moments, his family went from thinking about the future of their 17-year-old son to waiting beside a hospital bed and praying for his life.
Finn Shows Signs of Movement
The days following Finn's accident have brought both difficult news and reasons for hope. According to the fundraiser, Finn has regained some movement in his arms, although he has not yet regained movement in his hands or legs.
For a teenager who had been active enough to participate in lifeguard training, suddenly being unable to move much of his body represents a tremendous physical and emotional challenge.
But Finn's battle has involved more than his spinal cord injury.
His mother, Courtney, shared in an Aug. 19 update that Finn was placed on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) after struggling to breathe for more than two weeks.
ECMO is an advanced form of life support that can temporarily take over important functions of the heart and lungs, allowing the body time to rest and heal.
For Finn, the treatment is intended to give his lungs an opportunity to recover. At just 17 years old, he is facing a medical battle most people could never imagine. Yet his family continues to hope. And sometimes hope is exactly what carries us through the days when we cannot see what tomorrow will bring.

His Words Before Surgery Revealed His Heart
One detail Finn's mother shared about the moments before his emergency surgery says a great deal about the young man at the center of this story.
Courtney described her son to KGTV as a sweet young man with plenty of personality.
As doctors prepared him for surgery following the accident, Finn reportedly asked them to remove his mask so he could speak.
What he said was remarkable.
According to his mother, Finn told the medical team:
“I just wanted to thank you all so much for doing your best to try to keep me alive.”
Imagine being 17 years old, seriously injured, surrounded by doctors and nurses and uncertain about what comes next. Yet Finn was thinking about the people trying to save him.
There is something deeply moving about gratitude expressed in the middle of suffering. The Bible repeatedly encourages us to remain thankful, even during difficult seasons.
“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:18
That doesn't mean we are thankful for tragedy. It means that even inside tragedy, we can still recognize the people who help us, the love surrounding us, and the blessings that remain. Finn's words are a beautiful reminder of that kind of gratitude.
A Long Road Toward Recovery
Finn's immediate battle is to become medically stable, but another enormous challenge lies ahead.
According to the family's fundraiser, plans are being made for Finn to eventually be transferred to Craig Hospital in Colorado, where he can begin specialized spinal cord rehabilitation.
Recovery from a severe spinal cord injury can involve extensive rehabilitation, medical treatment and adaptive equipment. For Finn and his family, this journey could last months and perhaps much longer.
The fundraiser explains that his recovery will require specialized therapy, ongoing medical care, travel, equipment and continued support.
His mother has described Finn as both “strong” and “stubborn.”
In circumstances like these, a little stubbornness may be exactly what helps someone keep fighting through another therapy session, another difficult day and another uncertain tomorrow. His family remains optimistic and is hoping for a full recovery.
No one can know exactly what Finn's recovery will ultimately look like. Spinal cord injuries are complicated, and every patient's journey is different. But there is nothing wrong with hoping. And there is certainly nothing wrong with praying.
Where Is God When Everything Changes?
Stories like Finn's raise difficult questions.
- Why would something like this happen to a 17-year-old?
- Why would a young man training to help protect others suddenly find himself fighting for his own life?
We don't have simple answers to questions like these. The Bible never promises Christians a life without accidents, sickness, pain or suffering. Jesus actually told His followers:
“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” — John 16:33
Faith doesn't mean pretending everything is okay when it isn't. Faith means trusting that God is still present when everything is not okay.
God can be present in an ICU. He can be present beside a hospital bed. He can strengthen exhausted parents. He can work through surgeons, nurses, respiratory specialists, therapists and first responders.
He can surround a frightened family through friends, strangers and communities who choose to pray and help. And when we don't know what tomorrow holds, we can still trust the One who does.

The Power of a Community That Shows Up
Courtney has expressed tremendous gratitude for the support her family has received since Finn's accident.
“Everyone has been such a huge support,” she told KGTV.
That support matters.
When tragedy strikes, people often wonder what they can possibly do. We cannot personally repair a spinal cord injury. We cannot take away a mother's fear or guarantee what will happen next. But that doesn't mean we are powerless.
- We can pray.
- We can encourage.
- We can help when we're able.
- We can remind families walking through tragedy that they are not alone.
Galatians 6:2 tells us:
“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”
Sometimes carrying another person's burden simply means standing beside them when the road becomes too heavy to walk alone. Finn's family will need that support throughout the long journey ahead.
Please Pray for Finn
Today, we are asking the Gods411 community to join us in praying for Finn and his family.
Please pray that Finn's lungs continue to heal and strengthen.
Pray for improvement in his neurological function and for progress in his arms, hands and legs.
Pray for wisdom for every doctor, nurse, surgeon and specialist involved in his care.
Pray that his body responds well to treatment and that he becomes strong enough for the next stage of rehabilitation.
Pray for his parents and family as they navigate exhausting days, difficult decisions and an uncertain future.
And pray that Finn continues to have the courage and determination to fight through every challenge ahead.
We believe prayer matters, not because it guarantees that life will unfold exactly as we want, but because prayer brings our deepest fears, hopes and needs before God.
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18
Holding Onto Hope One Day at a Time
Finn's life changed in seconds when a routine dive ended with a devastating injury. But his story is not finished.
- There are doctors still working.
- There are therapists preparing for the road ahead.
- There is a family refusing to give up hope.
- There is a community standing behind them.
And there is a 17-year-old young man who, even while facing emergency surgery, took a moment to thank the people trying to save his life.
The months ahead may bring victories, setbacks and difficult days. Recovery from a spinal cord injury rarely follows a simple path.
For now, Finn and his family are taking that journey one day at a time.
And we can walk beside them in prayer.
Heavenly Father,
we lift Finn before You today. Please place Your healing hand upon his body. Strengthen his lungs, protect his spinal cord and bring restoration wherever possible. Give his doctors wisdom and steady hands. Give his family peace when fear overwhelms them and strength when they are exhausted. Surround Finn with Your presence during every procedure, every night in the hospital and every step of rehabilitation. Remind this family that they are never alone. Lord, we ask for healing, strength and hope for Finn in the days ahead.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
Please keep Finn Renard and his family in your prayers.
If you would like to encourage this family from wherever you are today, leave a prayer for Finn in the comments. And please share his story so that more people can join together in lifting this young man and his family up in prayer.
At Gods411, we believe that even when circumstances change in an instant, God remains faithful and hope is never something we have to face alone.
