According to reports from the Associated Press and the Wayne County, Utah Sheriff's Office, the Long family was hiking near Sunglow Campground outside Bicknell, Utah, on Friday, July 17, when severe weather moved into the area.

Authorities believe the family arrived at the campground around 11:30 a.m. Heavy rain later caused dangerous flash flooding to rush through the narrow canyon system. Around 5:00 p.m., deputies responded after receiving a report that a body had been discovered near the campground.

In an official statement, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office explained that deputies located the body of a young boy in a wash before immediately launching a large-scale search and rescue operation. As search teams combed the rugged terrain, they discovered two additional young males who had also lost their lives in the flooding.

Officials stated that it appeared the family had become victims of rapidly rising floodwaters caused by the intense rainfall. The following day, search crews located two additional victims in the area, completing the heartbreaking discovery that claimed the lives of all five family members who had been hiking together.
