Mom Thought Her Daughter Had Growing Pains—Then a Golf Ball-Sized Lump Revealed Thyroid Cancer
Sometimes a parent's heart senses that something isn't right long before answers arrive. As Christians, we are reminded that God can give us wisdom, discernment, and the courage to keep seeking help when the path ahead is uncertain (James 1:5).
That was the difficult journey Cheryl Barber faced with her daughter, Tamelia.

In September 2022, Cheryl, who lives in London, noticed a dramatic change in her energetic 9-year-old daughter. Tamelia began complaining of constant fatigue and aching legs. The little girl who had loved dancing since she was four years old suddenly no longer had the strength to attend her lessons.
"It was like the light just disappeared from her eyes," Cheryl recalled.
After school, Tamelia was simply exhausted. Activities she once enjoyed no longer interested her because she didn't have the energy. Along with the fatigue came weight gain and mood changes, prompting Cheryl to seek medical advice.
Initial blood tests and examinations came back normal. Doctors believed the symptoms were consistent with growing pains, puberty, and normal childhood development.
For many parents, that reassurance would have ended the search. But Cheryl couldn't shake the feeling that something more was going on. Looking back, she says she never truly believed growing pains explained everything she was seeing.
"I knew in my gut something wasn't right," she said.

More than a year of appointments and continued concerns eventually led to the discovery of a golf ball-sized lump in Tamelia's throat. After surgery to remove the mass, doctors confirmed the heartbreaking diagnosis in November 2025: thyroid cancer. Tamelia later began radiation treatment in May 2026.
Doctors reportedly believe the cancer may have been present for several years before it was identified.
As any parent can imagine, Cheryl wrestled with frustration, wondering whether the warning signs could have been recognized sooner. Yet instead of giving up, she has chosen to encourage other families to continue advocating for their children when something doesn't seem right.
Her message is simple: don't ignore persistent concerns.
As Christians, stories like this remind us that God often works through perseverance, wisdom, caring physicians, and parents who refuse to stop searching for answers. Prayer is never a substitute for medical care, but it is a powerful companion during seasons of uncertainty. We can ask God for discernment while faithfully pursuing the help our loved ones need.
Today, Tamelia's journey continues. According to her family's GoFundMe page, she later underwent surgery to remove her entire thyroid and will require lifelong medication. The fundraiser hopes to bring moments of joy back into the life of a young girl who has spent years battling illness instead of simply enjoying childhood.

Please keep Tamelia, Cheryl, and their entire family in your prayers. Pray that God would strengthen them physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Pray for healing, peace that surpasses understanding, wisdom for every doctor involved in her care, and encouragement for every parent walking through a similar season of unanswered questions.
Even when the road is long and the answers are slow to come, God remains faithful. He walks beside us through every valley, offering hope, strength, and the promise that we are never alone.
"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." — Psalm 46:1
