Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter recently spoke with ABC News' Aaron Katersky during an interview that aired on Good Morning America on July 14. He emphasized that investigators are carefully gathering every piece of evidence before reaching any conclusions.

"I think it's important we don't put ourselves on a timetable, that we don't rush ourselves," Ledbetter said. "But I do think it's important to be diligent in gathering all the facts. That's what the family deserves."

Authorities have previously said they believe Wells may have drowned after disappearing while spending the holiday weekend with friends on Horn Island, a barrier island along Mississippi's Gulf Coast. However, officials have not yet determined an official cause of death, and investigators continue to await autopsy and toxicology results.

One factor that has drawn attention is the danger of rip currents. The waters around Horn Island have experienced dangerous currents before. In 2022, a teenage girl had to be rescued after becoming trapped in a rip current near nearby Dauphin Island.

As one local resident described it at the time, "It's like an invisible force you can't see it."

Wells' body was discovered near the island's northwest shoreline two days after he disappeared, but many questions remain unanswered.

His family has expressed doubts that the tragedy was simply an accidental drowning. Their attorney, Ben Crump, has publicly questioned how such an event could have occurred without anyone noticing or attempting to help.

According to Wells' friend, Tracestin Shepherd, members of the group spent much of the holiday swimming and socializing.

"We were just having fun all day," Shepherd said. "As the day went on, people started to drink more and people started getting more drunk."

However, Brian Trascher, vice president and spokesman for the United Cajun Navy which assisted in the search said it remains unclear how much, if any, alcohol Wells himself consumed.

"My understanding is that even though there were pictures of the boys drinking beer and stuff, Nolan's blood alcohol level was not at an intoxicated level," said Trascher 

Shepherd has also spoken publicly against the intense online speculation surrounding the case. He said he and the other young people who were with Wells have received threats despite cooperating fully with investigators.

"We did no wrong here," Shepherd said. "We all cared and loved Nolan, and nobody wanted to see Nolan die."

He later told Rolling Stone that he wanted to speak publicly because misinformation had spread rapidly online, adding that both he and his friends have been deeply affected by the accusations. Sheriff Ledbetter has confirmed that those who were on the trip have cooperated with investigators.
