Trump Announces Plan To Rededicate America To God On 250th Anniversary

President Trump announced his intention to rededicate America to God during the 250th anniversary year of the nation’s founding, sharing the message at Thursday morning’s National Prayer Breakfast.

During his remarks, he revisited earlier comments in which he had joked about whether he would make it into heaven. Referring to media coverage of the moment, Trump said he had been speaking humorously and that sarcasm is often misunderstood.

“I said, ‘I’m never going to make it to heaven. I just don’t think I qualify,’” he recalled, explaining that the remark was meant in jest despite the good works he believes he has done, including efforts supporting religion. He added that some reports interpreted the comment as a deeper personal reflection, which he rejected. “No,” he said. “I was just having fun. I really think I probably should make it.”

Turning his focus to the nation, Trump emphasized the role of faith in America’s identity. “To be a great nation, you have to have religion. You have to have faith. You have to have God,” he said.

He then outlined plans for a national rededication ceremony, stating that America would be rededicated as “one nation under God” during this historic anniversary year. A prayer gathering is scheduled to take place on the National Mall on May 17.

“We’re inviting Americans from all across the country to come together on our National Mall to pray, to give thanks, and we are going to rededicate America as one nation under God,” Trump said.

The event is being organized in partnership with Freedom 250, a national nonpartisan organization helping lead the celebration of America’s 250th birthday alongside the White House Task Force 250. According to the group, the ceremony will unite people from every state in thanksgiving for 250 years of God’s providence, in prayer for the nation’s future, and in a solemn rededication of the United States as one nation under God.

Through speech, music, and storytelling, participants will reflect on the people, sacrifices, and defining moments that have shaped the country’s history. Organizers describe the gathering as more than an event, calling it a once-in-a-lifetime national moment.
