California Authorities Report Missing Mother and 8-Month-Old Daughter Found Dead In Canal

Relatives have tragically reported that the bodies of Whisper Owen, a resident of Sacramento County, and her 8-month-old daughter, Sandra McCarty, have been discovered in their vehicle, which was located submerged in a canal near Oakdale. 

The mother and daughter had been reported missing since July 15. They were last seen in Fresno, and it was later revealed that traffic cameras captured Owen's vehicle in the Atwater area on the very night of their disappearance, adding to the urgency of the investigation.

In response to the alarming situation, the California Highway Patrol promptly issued an Endangered Missing Advisory, raising public awareness and enlisting help in the search.

On Sunday, a dedicated search group known as Adventures With Purpose, accompanied by diver Juan Heredia, began their mission in a rural part of west Oakdale. With hopes of locating the missing individuals, the search team utilized insight from Owen’s family, who informed them that police had pinged her cellphone, revealing that the last signal originated from a canal in that vicinity.

Investigators later located Owen's vehicle trapped beneath a bridge in the area, which is where search team members sadly discovered the remains of both Whisper and her infant daughter.

"This news, though heartbreaking, brings us a step closer to finding a way to process this profound loss. Whisper has other children who are now faced with the unimaginable task of moving forward without their mother and their baby sister," expressed Richard Owen, Whisper's brother, conveying the family's grief and the need for healing.

The search team from the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office quickly responded to the scene, and upon further investigation, they confirmed the presence of both an adult and an infant in the submerged vehicle.

The California Highway Patrol has committed to conducting a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the vehicle ending up in the water. Additionally, detectives from the Fresno Police Department have been dispatched to assist at the scene, ensuring that a comprehensive investigation continues in the wake of this tragic incident.
