The Legend Of The Candy Cane

Many of you think you know the story behind this simple treat, but what many of you may not know is that this is a story from God.

Our story starts many years ago on a cold winter night, much like tonight. A candy maker was busy and felt a nudge, a nudge to bring Jesus back into Christmas.

So, the candy maker thought a moment, and decided he could make a sweet confection that would remind people of Jesus, during every Christmas.

He wanted it to represent faith, and to be a tool for witnessing to others. He knew he wanted it to include the most important symbols of the season:
  • Jesus' birth
  • His ministry
  • His death
Being the expert candy maker that he was, he started with a clean slate, a white candy that would represent the virgin birth. He made the candy hard to represent Jesus as our rock.

Then he said to himself, "A good shape for this candy would be a J for Jesus," and if turned the other way, it could represent the staff of the shepherd going out to the stray sheep and bringing them in from being lost.

Critiquing his creation, he felt it looked too simple.

Then, another nudge came and tickled his imagination, he would make 3 small red stripes and one large one. The 3 small stripes would represent Jesus' scorning, by His stripes we are healed. The one large stripe would represent the blood Jesus shed on the cross. So that we could have the promise of eternal life.

Do you think the candy maker was alone in his creation? When you see a candy cane, remember the candy maker's intentions for this simple candy...

Jesus IS the reason for the season!
