In 2013, Harrison Okene was working as a cook aboard a tugboat off the coast of Nigeria. Early in the morning, the boat capsized suddenly in rough waters. Eleven crew members were trapped underwater—nearly 100 feet deep—as the vessel sank to the ocean floor. All were presumed dead. But unknown to the world, one man was still alive.
Harrison found himself trapped in complete darkness, barefoot, surrounded by freezing water, in a tiny 4-foot air pocket inside the wreckage. With no food, no light, and no way out, he cried out to Jesus.
Alone and terrified, he began to pray and recite Scripture. He remembered Psalm 54, which says, “Surely God is my help; the Lord is the one who sustains me.” For 3 days, Harrison stayed alive—with no scuba gear, no light, and no hope in human terms—but God was with him.
On the third day, a rescue diver searching for bodies nearly missed him—until Harrison reached out and touched his hand. The diver was shocked. Everyone was. It was a miracle.
Scientists still can’t fully explain how he survived without oxygen poisoning or hypothermia. But Harrison has no doubt: it was God.
Today, he shares his story to testify of God’s faithfulness, saying, “I was the only one who survived, by God’s grace. It’s a testimony that He still saves.”
Let this remind you: Even when you feel trapped, forgotten, or buried deep in darkness—God sees you. He’s with you. And He can make a way out when no one else can.
He’s still the God of miracles. He’s still the God who rescues.
Keep believing. Keep praying. You’re never too far gone for Jesus
