An image of a single father selling pens on the streets, while carrying his sleeping daughter went viral, sparking the #BuyPen campaign on Indiegogo, which raised over $191,000.
Business Insider recently featured him, noting that he has received 40% of the donations and has used them to transform his life. He moved his family into a larger apartment, opened a kebab shop, a restaurant, and two bakeries, employing 16 other refugees. His children are now in school.
Al-Attar shared, "Not only did my life change, but also the lives of my children and the lives of Syrian people whom I helped."
His campaign highlights the potential of empathy to change lives and build communities. The goal is to provide similar opportunities for all those in misfortune to rebuild their lives.
