Alba was just a few days old when her parents put her up for adoption because she has Down syndrome. By the time she was only 13 days old, 20 other families had decided not to adopt her. Fortunately, a single dad decided to adopt her.
Luca Trapanese’s story became popular when he wrote a book about his life with Alba. He believes his story challenges common ideas about fatherhood, religion, and family. In Italy, adoption laws are strict, and single parents rarely get approved. However, Alba’s condition allowed for an exception. Luca said he felt no hesitation about adopting her and rushed to the hospital to complete the paperwork as soon as he was approved.
Luca had experience volunteering and working with children who have disabilities, so he felt ready to raise a child with Down syndrome. He was excited to become a dad.
“When I held her in my arms, I was filled with joy,” he told the BBC. “I felt she was my daughter immediately. I knew I was ready to be her father.”
Now almost 2 years old, Alba loves to play and meet new people. “I will spend the rest of my life with a girl I love,” Luca says, “and we will do many wonderful things together.”
